EXERCISE IRON HORIZON - Joint Warfare Military Exercise
Statement from the Exercise Commander, Colonel Aleksandr Volkov, RGA.
Ladies and gentlemen,
As of 0600 hours this morning, the Republic of Greica has formally commenced Exercise Iron Horizon, a joint land-air operation designed to evaluate and refine our warfighting capabilities at scale.
This exercise integrates mechanized ground forces, infantry formations, and aviation assets under a unified command structure. The focus for this exercise is functionality and evaluation, testing how forces move, communicate, and fight under conditions that reflect modern conflict.
On the ground, units are executing maneuver warfare scenarios, including rapid advances, defensive stabilization, and contested urban operations. These evolutions are structured to emphasize tactical decision-making while maintaining alignment with operational objectives. We anticipate the exercise will shut down airspace in and around Volnaiskra Aerodrome for a short period in the coming days. Advance notice of this shutdown will be communicated to the appropriate authorities in accordance with the law.
In the air domain, fixed-wing and rotary platforms are conducting continuous sorties in direct coordination with ground elements. Close air support, reconnaissance, and airspace control are being exercised simultaneously. Additionally, elements of the Greican Space Surveillance array will also be evaluated in supporting roles. Timing, precision, and communication are being evaluated in real time.
A key component of Iron Horizon is command and control. Our joint operations centers are managing live battlefield inputs across all participating elements. This includes testing our ability to sustain tempo, maintain situational awareness, and adapt to evolving conditions without loss of cohesion.
Let me be clear on intent. This is not an exercise designed for optics. It is designed to identify weaknesses, correct them, and ensure that Greica’s armed forces can operate as a cohesive, disciplined force across domains.
The exercise will progress in phases. Each phase will introduce increased complexity, including degraded communications, contested environments, and accelerated operational timelines.
At its conclusion, we will conduct a full assessment and implement necessary adjustments to doctrine, training, and force structure. The Exercise Public Affairs Officer, RGAF Major Elena Markovic, will produce further messaging concerning this exercise.
Our objective is simple: evaluate readiness in an increasingly complex operational environment.
I’ll now turn it over to Major Markovic for questions. Thank you.
-=WHAT FOLLOWS IS A Q&A SESSION BETWEEN EXERCISE PAO MAJOR MARKOVIC AND THE PRESS=-
Q: Can you clarify the overall scale of Iron Horizon? How large is this exercise?
A (Markovic): Iron Horizon involves multiple brigades of ground forces supported by a full complement of aviation assets. Exact numbers are not being disclosed, but this is one of the most comprehensive joint exercises conducted in Greica to date.
Q: Are any foreign observers or partner nations involved?
A: At this time, Iron Horizon is a nationally executed exercise. However, select observers have been invited in a limited capacity to monitor specific phases. Our focus remains on internal capability development. There is no foreign involvement.
Q: There are reports of simulated electronic warfare and degraded communications. Can you confirm?
A: Elements of contested environments are being introduced, including limited communications disruption. Modern operations do not occur under ideal conditions, and our training reflects that reality. These operations are designed to remain within controlled parameters and are not expected to impact civilian technologies.
Q: Is this exercise in response to any specific regional threat?
A: No single event prompted Iron Horizon. This is part of a broader, long-term effort to build a capable and responsive force. Readiness is not reactive. It is continuous.
